MEARS
WATER
My creative relationship to water comes not
from the actual physical characteristics of the element: that
is to say, not from the way it sparkles when the sun bounces off
it, or the way it moves as it meanders down a rocky stream, or
the way it sounds as it crashes into a sandy beach, or even the
way it feels as we slide into it. The latter comes closest though.
For me water represents the unconscious,
the deepest unknown of our being. Therefore, the creatures that
inhabit this mysterious abyss are the messengers who bring us
knowledge and understanding of our inner being if we are willing
to be open to their presence and listen. These inhabitants well
up at unexpected moments; it is imperative that we live in expectation
and openness to recognize them when they do appear. They are the
great teachers who find their sustenance in the watery well of
the unconscious.
